A Georgian memoriam brooch dated 1807, featuring a finely woven lock of interlaced blonde and brunette hair preserved beneath a domed glazed panel. The hair is arranged in a traditional plaited design, framed by a halo of seed pearls and set in gold. Engraved on the reverse are the names and dates of the deceased: Philip Francis obt 26 Mar 1807 at 68 and Rd Francis obt 31 Mar 1807 At 29.
Memoriam brooches were a form of mourning jewellery, created to honour the dead and keep their memory close. They often included a lock of hair, chosen for its permanence and deep personal resonance. This example is particularly rare in that it commemorates the deaths of two individuals just days apart, suggesting the entwined hair belongs to both. Most pieces of this kind memorialise a single person, making this dual tribute especially poignant. Carefully crafted and richly symbolic, it offers a moving glimpse into the private rituals of grief and remembrance in the early 19th century.
